2001 was inspired by Clarke's short story 'The Sentinel,' and the screenplay for the film was co-authored by Clarke and the film's director, Stanley Kubrick. It stands as an iconic work of science fiction.

2001 is followed by three sequels, the first of which is 2010: Odyssey Two, published in 1982. The Clarke Library at the University of Liverpool contains many non-English language editions of his works, like this Danish edition of 2010, published in 1983.
The third and penultimate novel in the 'Space Odyssey' series, 2061: Odyssey Three was published in 1987.
